Do I Need a License to Drive a Snowmobile in Colorado?

For most people, the snow beginning to fall can be incredibly annoying. Those frosty flakes can create a lot of hazards if people aren’t careful. It’s also time-consuming and exhausting to have to dust off your car every morning. If it is icy and cold, then most people think about going back inside and calling in sick rather than dealing with it.

Some people get excited when it comes to heavy snowfalls. Once the inches start to pile up, people can finally break out the snowmobiles. These sporty vehicles let you have some fun in winter, but it is always important to be reminded of the rules. We’ll show you some of the most important rules to keep in mind.

Snowmobile Laws in Colorado

The first thing that most people will worry about is permits and licensing. Do you need a special permit or license? In Colorado, there is no need for a special license, but you do need to have your snowmobile registered. Non-residents of the state are required to purchase a Colorado Non-Resident Snowmobile permit to drive. Those permits can be purchased via mail or ordered online.

If you live in a more open area or don’t want to risk the roads, then you might wonder if driving your snowmobile on the road is allowed. In Colorado, driving your snowmobile on the road is perfectly legal if there is snow on the ground. You cannot drive it on the highway or freeway. The rules might be a bit different from city to city, so be sure to double-check local ordinances.
