Differences Between Bumper Pull vs Fifth Wheel vs Toy Hauler

Which Travel Trailer Should I Buy?

Buying a travel trailer is a big, but worthwhile, investment. However, unless you know exactly which trailer you need, it might be hard to distinguish which one to buy. Here at Carville’s Auto Mart, we offer three main trailer types: bumper pulls, fifth wheels and toy haulers. So let’s look at the differences of each to determine which travel trailer you should buy.

What is a Bumper Pull Trailer?

A bumper pull trailer is a more conventional travel trailer. Usually the simplest and most efficient way to hook up a trailer, you only need to connect your bumper pull coupling to the hitch ball on the back of your vehicle.

One of the best features of a bumper pull trailer is that it has the advantage of being towed by many different types of vehicles, and since it follows the path of the vehicle, it makes it easier to turn corners in a normal matter. However, you’ll want to double-check to make sure your vehicle meets the requirements given by the manufacturer before you start to tow a bumper pull travel trailer.

What is a Fifth Wheel Trailer?

Some trailers require a fifth wheel configuration, which means that the coupling needs to be installed in the bed of a truck for it to be able to tow. While the installation of a fifth wheel hitch in the bed of your truck is a trickier task, it is a great option when needing to haul a heavy travel trailer. Fifth wheel hitches allow for an increased turn radius due to a decrease in overall length, seeing as how the front end of your trailer sits above the truck bed.

What is a Toy Hauler Trailer?

A toy hauler trailer does just what the name suggests. Typically using a large opening and ramp door, toy haulers are great for bringing “toys” such as ATVs, motorcycles, jet-skis or even sometimes entire cars along for your trip. However, toy hauler users do need to think about the weight of the trailer they are hauling. Make sure that you don’t take along too many toys to ensure the trailer gets towed safely.

Which travel trailer you decide to go with depends mainly on what kind of vehicle you have, what you want to bring along on your trip and the ease of hooking up the trailer. Bumper pull trailers are the easiest trailer to attach and can attach to a larger variety of vehicles, fifth wheel trailers can easily be hauled by trucks and provide a shorter overall length to aid driving, and toy haulers are able to carry fun toys with ease for your trip.
