How to tell if your vehicle is leaking oil

As our vehicles get older and start to develop wear and tear, it’s only natural that they’ll start leaking fluids at some point or another. In most cases, this is a benign issue (usually caused by coolant fluid or water condensation,) but in others, such as leaky motor oil, it could spell trouble for your model down the road. We’re here to help, though, so come join Carville’s Auto Mart today as we show you how to tell if your vehicle is leaking oil. With this information, it’ll be much easier to detect any potential issues!

What color is leaky oil?

It varies by the age and model type of your vehicle, but in most cases, leaking oil will range from a light brown, thin liquid, to a more viscous jet black color. Also depending on your vehicle’s construction, this type of leak could come from anywhere underneath its body – this means that you’ll want to keep an eye out anywhere for potential problems.

What does an oil leak smell like?

Motor oil is unique in that it comes in many different forms when expelled from underneath your vehicle. Sometimes it can be odorless, and other times you’ll notice it by that distinctive “motor oil” smell. However, if you notice a strong, pungent “rotten egg” smell that you’re sure is coming from your vehicle, that usually means that there’s a lube oil issue from either your rear axle or transmission.
