What is the Difference Between Bumper and Gooseneck Trailers?

When you need to haul or tow something, you usually call the person with the truck. Trucks are made to do the heavy lifting that other vehicles can’t do. It can be grueling sometimes, but it is also a satisfying feeling to know you are able to take on any challenge.

Your truck isn’t the only thing that will affect how much you can tow. If you’re new to towing and hauling, then you might not know there are different styles of trailers. Each style will have its own benefits, but at the end of the day a trailer is a trailer, right? How different can they be? Let’s see what the difference is.

Bumper versus Gooseneck Trailers

The first big difference between these trailer styles is how they work with your truck. A bumper hitch will attach to the knob on the back of your truck. Gooseneck trailers bend over the tailgate and slide over a hitch in the bed of the truck. It may not seem like a big difference at first, but it can affect a lot.

Size is a big difference between these trailers. Gooseneck trailers tend to be a bit larger because it doesn’t destabilize the vehicle as much. This also means it can usually tow a bit more than a bumper trailer can. Bumper trailers tend to be smaller and lighter, but lack the stability and sway control that gooseneck trailers have. They are more universally available, though. SUVs and RVs have bumper hitches, while only trucks have the ability to pull gooseneck trailers.
